2010 Clemson Calculus Challenge

Invitation

The Department of Mathematical Sciences at Clemson University will host the sixth annual “Clemson Calculus Challenge,” (CCC ) on Friday, April 9, 2010. The competition will take place in Meeting Rooms A and B and the Almeda Rogers Jacks Ballroom, located within the Hendrix Student Center. We invite you to bring a group (≤ 12) of your calculus students and join us for this competition.

The CCC  tests calculus knowledge of the topics covered in the Advanced Placement Calculus AB syllabus. The CCC  consists of two components: an individual exam and a team competition. During the morning session each participant will take a 90-minute calculus test. The morning exam consists of 40 multiple-choice questions. After a lunch break, the CCC  will continue with a short research presentation and then the team competition will follow. The afternoon competition will have six rounds of open-response questions. Each round will last ten minutes. Team size for the afternoon competition may range from a minimum of two students to a maximum of four students. Each high school can enter up to twelve students and three teams. Team members must be registered online by Monday, April 5, 2010. Any last minute changes must be specified at check-in on the day of the contest. The use of calculators is strictly forbidden on the morning exam and the team competition.

Immediately following the team competition, the awards ceremony will take place. Awards will be presented to individuals, teams, and school winners in each division.

As usual, we expect to award $500 scholarships to attend Clemson University to some of the winners of the individual competition. The number of scholarships will be determined by available funds. Recipients must enroll at Clemson University in order to receive the scholarships.

All contestants will receive a T-shirt at registration. Each participant is to provide their own lunch. There are many dining options both on and off campus. The Hendrix Student Center houses the East Side Food Court, and Schilletter Dining Hall is a short walk from the Hendrix Student Center.

There will be coffee and refreshments for the teachers/coaches while students are taking the individual calculus test in the morning.

Registration for the contest is online. Once the online registration form is submitted, registration fees must be mailed to complete your registration. The registration fees are $7.00 per student and $7.00 per school. The deadline for the online registration submission is Friday, March 26, 2010. The registration fees must be received by Monday, March 29, 2010. If you have any questions about the Clemson Calculus Challenge, please send an email to Terri Johnson or Shari Prevost.

We hope to see you at the Clemson Calculus Challenge on April 9, 2010.

Financial Aid

The Department of Mathematical Sciences at Clemson University anticipates support from the National Science Foundation (NSF) to subsidize travel expenses for a number of participants in the 2010 Clemson Calculus Challenge. Schools that are funded will receive partial reimbursement of transportation expenses based on the round trip mileage from their schools to Clemson University. In addition, schools may apply for lodging for the night before the CCC . A block of rooms will be reserved at a Clemson area hotel for participants and their teachers/chaperones. Each school granted lodging will be provided a minimal number of rooms that will accommodate up to four same-sex students per room and up to two same-sex teachers/chaperones per room.

Each registrant that completes the online registration will automatically be eligible for financial aid to attend the 2010 CCC . Registration must be submitted online by March 26, 2010 to be considered for financial aid. Financial aid awards will be based on criteria including, but not limited to, financial need and location of participating school.

2010 Clemson Calculus Challenge Forms

All participants in the 2010 Clemson Calculus Challenge are must complete the online Registration/Financial Aid and Team Registration forms. In addition to these online forms, each school must bring a completed Photo Permission Form for each participating student. The Department of Mathematical Sciences and Clemson University will publicize the 2010 Clemson Calculus Challenge in different media outlets. We would like to use photographs taken during the event for promotion of the CCC . We will also share any photographs with your school for your team's publicity. Please help us in this publicity effort by securing all signatures on the enclosed consent form (Photo Permission Form) asking for the use of photos we take of your students during this year's CCC . We have included one copy of the consent form. We ask that you make a copy of the form for each of your team members, collect the signed forms, bring them with you, and hand them in during registration. If your school already has a signed photo permission form that would cover the CCC  and allow us to use photos of the students, just bring a copy of those forms or have your school send a letter indicating that we are covered.
