Invitation

The Department of Mathematical Sciences at Clemson University will host the "Clemson Calculus Challenge," (CCC) on Friday, April 21, 2006. The competition will take place in the Tiger Den, located within Clemson Memorial Stadium (Death Valley). We invite you to bring a group of your calculus students and join us for this competition.

The CCC consists of two components: an individual exam and a team competition. Beginning at 10 a.m., each participant will take a ninety minute calculus test. After a lunch break the Challenge will continue with a team competition in the afternoon from 1:00 to 2:30 p.m. Team size for the afternoon competition may range from a minimum of two students to a maximum of four students. Each high school can enter up to twelve students and three teams. Team members must be specified at check-in on the day of the contest. Calculators will not be allowed or required for individual and team competitions.

After the team competition, there will be a short presentation describing some opportunities for research and study in the College of Engineering and Science at Clemson University. Following this presentation, we will have an awards ceremony with individual, team, and school prizes for small and large schools.

This year, we expect to award $500 scholarships to attend Clemson University to some of the winners in the individual competition. The number of scholarships will be determined by available funds. Recipients must enroll at Clemson University in the fall of 2006 in order to receive the scholarships.

All contestants will receive a T-shirt at registration. Each participant is to provide their own lunch. There are many dining options both on and off campus. Harcombe Food Court is a short walk from the stadium.

There will be coffee and refreshments for the teachers/coaches while students are taking the individual calculus test in the morning.

Registration forms, a schedule, a map and other information may be found at the web site: at www.math.clemson.edu/CCC, which is also linked from the Mathematical Sciences Department web page at www.math.clemson.edu. You may print out a registration form, complete it and return it to the address specified on the form. Registration deadline is March 31, 2006.
