Martin O Renovation
Final Report 9-21-97
Physical Plant
Martin Hall O-Wing on the Clemson University campus, Clemson, SC, is a
four-story building of steel, block, and brick construction. All floors
are to be renovated. Each floor has two hallways that run north south with
offices on each side of these hallways. There is a large central room on
each floor. It is anticipated that the renovation will extend the life
of this building for approximately 15 years.
Planned Modifications
-
Asbestos removal.
-
New HVAC System.
-
Office modifications: The large four window offices, O-20, O-113,
and O-226, will be cut in half by adding three walls and three doors. HVAC
and electrical modifications will also be required. A hallway door will
be cut for O-101. After these modifications the department will have five
large four-window offices. The chair, the undergraduate program director,
the graduate program director, and the person performing the duties associated
with the former title of associate head will be eligible for a large office.
-
Wiring Closet: We will continue to use our current wiring closet.
DCIT network services should be consulted to see if this room should have
cooling.
-
Server room: O-9, which is adjacent to the wiring closet, will become
the server room. It will contain the four department servers, the raid
array, and provide for a small amount of storage. This room will require
the maximum cooling available.
-
System programmer offices: O-8, directly across the hall from the
server room O-9, will be reserved for the Unix system programmer. O-7 will
be reserved for the Mac/PC system programmer.
-
Storage: O-10A will be used to store department supplies and O-10B
will be used to store computer equipment and parts.
-
Central Room Modifications: O-10 should be provided with the same
treatment as a classroom in Martin M: lighting, electrical, projector,
and screen but no lectern. Instead of a lectern, a wall mounted breakout
panel will be installed. A portable cart/lectern can be moved near the
breakout panel as needed. The tables in this room should be movable so
that the room configuration can be changed. O-213 and O-313 should contain
2-4 phone drops and 2-4 Ethernet drops.
-
Noise Management: HVAC will be quiet and the dropped ceiling and
carpet will be sound absorbing. The lighting system should be mounted inside
the dropped ceiling and quiet Lutron fluorescent ballasts used.
-
Dropped Ceiling: The dropped ceiling will be as high as possible,
near 11 feet.
-
Power Outlets: Some of the offices could use an additional electrical
outlet. We may need to survey faculty on this issue.
-
Wiring and Cable Management System: A cable management system (conduit)
should be installed and phone and Ethernet wiring should be brought up
to the campus standard. We may need to survey faculty on the need for video
feeds in the offices. A few may want this. At a later date Clemson may
broadcast tutorials and help sessions on the campus video network and some
faculty may like to access this.
-
Lighting: Fluorescent lights with parabolic louvers should be mounted
in the dropped ceiling
-
Window Blinds and Shades: The HVAC system has contributed to the
demise of the blinds because the windows open in on the blinds. A new HVAC
system should solve this problem. The current blinds should be replaced.
-
Floor: Carpet squares will be used everywhere except for the hallways.
-
New Windows: New windows have been eliminated from the plan. FM&O
says they cannot order new parts for these windows. Clemson should have
its machine shop manufacture replacement slides and handles for these windows.
Many of these items need replacing.
-
Black Boards: Remove and store all blackboards and paint the walls.
After the renovation, the department will install white boards or blackboards
as needed.
-
Network Services: Network equipment for O should be upgraded as
previously discussed with DCIT network services. High bandwidth connection
Martin O and Martin E-7 Sun lab must be provided.
-
Furniture: Office furniture should be refurbished and faculty office
chairs replaced.
-
ETC: Walls will be repainted with a special, long-life product.
Bulletin boards will be refurbished or replaced. Two colors of ceiling
tiles will be used in the hallways. Bathrooms will be refurbished. HDCP
bathrooms will be provided on the first floor of Martin O with card access
after 4:30 PM. First floor hall mailboxes will be covered on both ends
of the first floor hallway.
