In May 1998, WebCT was selected as the application to provide web-based instructional support for the College of Engineering and Science Pilot Laptop Program at Clemson University. WebCT is a component of the Laptop Program's experimental study of the use of technology in support of a student centered, active learning model of instruction. The Laptop Program welcomed the use of WebCT by other interested faculty inside and outside the College during the 1998-1999 academic year. On the first day of classes for the fall 1998 semester, there were 124 WebCT courses and 3303 student accounts at Clemson. By mid-term of the spring 1999 semester, there were 133 WebCT courses and 8100 student accounts.
