The text for this course is ``Primes of the form x^2 + ny^2'' by David A.
Goals and Objectives.
To give the student a substantial introduction to the area of algebraic number
theory including class-field theory and elliptic curves and to prepare them
for more advanced topics and independent research.
I will cover chapters 1 and 2 of the text in their entirety. We will
continure into chapter 3 as time permits.
Please be sure to devote at least six hours per week outside of class to this

The following grading scale will be used:
You are expected to be regular and punctual in your class attendance. You
are expected to be in your seat at the beginning of the period and to remain
through the period until dismissed.
If the instructor is late, the class should begin a review of homework
problems. After 25 minutes, the class may leave.
