More LifeLines Report Programs

Here are some of my contributions to the LifeLines public program library.

The main emphasis in these programs is the line wrapping to make the text reports suitable for e-mail and printing. At first this was to fix a descendant tree program (pdesc.ll) that didn't have smart line wrapping. After that I made up my own simple family group program, also with the line wrapping feature. Next was connect, a program to list the family groups that connect an individual to a particular ancestor.

A descendant report that uses this family group report idea is on a separate page: drep. Paul Buckley modified this program to produce descendant reports in RTF, for nicer looking text and ease of import into word processing programs (with maintenance of indentation).

• pdesc4.ll -- produces indented descendant list with line wrapping at 80 columns (user-specifiable) while maintaining the indentation level. Enhancement from version 2 is the addition of user-specified maximum number of generations. Version 4 makes the page_width (not 1 less) the limit on character placement. Also eliminated an extra space at the beginning of each line that was not controlled by a left_margin parameter.
• indiv3.ll -- produces detailed ascii descriptions of one person and his/her spouses and children. Does line wrapping at 80 columns (user-specifiable), while maintaining all levels of indentation. This report includes the output of notes (or messages) on individuals, and is written to make it easy to change the maximum line width, indentation size, and left margin.
• connect2.ll -- asks for a descendant and an ancestor and gives info like that if indiv3.ll for each individual along the line connecting the two. This is handy for explaining to someone how you're connected to their ancestor. (Some people find closure by filling in details on the family groups along the way, rather than just having a string of sibling-less (or even spouse-less) individuals that connect one with distant cousins. This report should help toward that end.)
