IN THIS ISSUE: Riley Elected Chairman of Educom Board of Trustees Alvarez, Johnson, Maltz and O'Brien Elected to the Board RILEY ELECTED CHAIRMAN OF EDUCOM BOARD Donald R. Riley has been elected Chairman of the Board of Trustees of Educom, the nonprofit consortium of colleges, universities and other organizations dedicated to the transformation of learning through information technology. Dr. Riley is the Associate Vice President for Academic Affairs and Acting Chief Information Officer for the University of Minnesota, Minneapolis, MN. He has been on the faculty of the University of Minnesota since 1976. In his position of Acting CIO, Dr. Riley is charged with overseeing the integration and restructuring of three central information technology organizations and developing an effective mechanism for academic and business system planning. As Associate Vice President, he is responsible for overall information technology planning and coordination; campus-wide support of academic computer and information technology services, including campus-wide network planning and implementation; and coordination with libraries, distance education, administrative information services, telecommunications, and high performance computing through the Minnesota Supercomputing Center, Inc., Minnesota Supercomputer Institute, and Army High Performance Computing Research Center. Dr. Riley holds Ph.D., M.S. and B.S. degrees in mechanical engineering from Purdue University. Research and teaching interests include application of interactive computer graphics and multimedia to CAD/CAM and the application of CAD/CAM techniques to biomechanical and bioengineering problems. Others elected to executive positions on the 1995-1996 Educom Board of Trustees are Mark Luker of the University of Wisconsin-Madison (to Vice Chair), Polley Ann McClure of the University of Virginia (to Secretary) and Sheila Creth of the University of Iowa (reelected to Treasurer). ALVAREZ, JOHNSON, MALTZ AND O'BRIEN ELECTED TO THE BOARD Newly elected Institutional Trustees are Laurence Alvarez, Associate Provost of the University of the South in Sewanee, Tennessee, and Leslie Maltz, Director of Computing and Communications Resources of the Stevens Institute of Technology in Hoboken, New Jersey. James W. Johnson, Associate Provost of Emory University in Atlanta, was reelected to a second term on the Board. Newly elected as Trustee-At-Large is J. Margaret O'Brien, President of Hollins College in Roanoke, Virginia. Through direct services and cooperative efforts, Educom assists its members and provides leadership for addressing critical issues about the role of information technology in higher education.
