Essential Characteristics of a Function

• Must be defined for the input value.
• Produces a unique output value for each input value.

Describing Functions

Functions can be described verbally, graphically, numerically (table of values), or by formula.

The Elementary Functions

Linear, power, polynomial, rational, algebraic, trigonometric, exponential, logarithmic

Symmetry in Functions

Functions may be even, f(x) = f(−x); odd, f(x) = f(−x); or neither.
