UCES COMMITTEE

April 15-16, 1994

Doubletree Albuquerque

Albuquerque, NM A logo needs to be developed. Any ideas are appreciated. J. Corones provided background information on the UCES project. Basic objectives of UCES project are:

UNDERGRADUATE COMPUTATIONAL SCIENCE AWARD

Recognition of winners is important. A letter to dean and university president should be send from UCES regarding the award. Also a notice in the local newspaper and newsletter of professional organization. The idea of having the award be a higher dollar value was discussed. The reason for not having a high value award is that this award is to recognize accomplishments, not pay to do the work. This is also a possible way to identify people to become involved in UCES networking group. T. Marchioro will have a newsgroup list where this award could be promoted put together by UCES members. The suggestion was made that high recognition the 1st year could result in a large increase in applications following years.

PUBLIC RELATIONS

D. Martin presented a draft public relations presentation. Copies of this will be made available upon request for presentation by UCES members, as well as a power point version being available on web.

UTAH PROJECT

J. Zachary presented a report on the course taught at Utah.

^LMODULES

Modules were presented by:

It was decided that a demo of modules will be available by last week of July for SIAM meeting.

NSF PROPOSA

Submission deadline June 6 F. Howes felt it was a good idea to submit a proposal for NSF support, using UCES as a core group. This would provide interagency cooperation - something new for NSF. Cooperation must, however, exist from the home institutions. The leading insitution will not be a laboratory. Discussion revolved around the one institution vs. consortium approach. It was decided that the proposal would take the form that DOE has provided investment for curriculum materials and the NSF portion will focus on implementation. Ames will provide a 1st draft of this proposal and submit to all UCES members. All UCES members should provide an implementation plan at your institution if such a proposal is funded.

ELECTRONIC JOURNAL

Intellectual content must be reviewable and defensible. Is this concept supportable by DOE funding. F. Howes is unsure but will check into this. This will be available to the public, there will be no paid subscriptions. Any funding would go to editorial board support. The idea of the journal would be to provide a connection from client to client. This is the type of thing which government want to promote.

What do we want the user to see?

INDUSTRIAL CONTACTS & MODULES OF INTERACTION

Industrial monies would be used as additional resource, not as replacement. Industry must have confidence in models. J. Corones, J. Diaz and M. Misra will coordinate and report back in July on Oil & Gas Industry perspective. Others might look for links to industrial sectors to understand needs. An Industry Advisory Group will be formed - possibly as soon as early fall.

SIAM MEETING

There will be a DOE Education booth to include CSEP, UCES, AiS and CSGF programs at the SIAM meeting. D. Zachman will work to get additional booth space for this. The possibility of CSGF fellows working the booth was vcoiced. This same concept should be followed for SC94.

TOPICS FOR NEXT MEETING

Agenda will include:

Bring in HTML of Latec file if no HTML. If you can get a Latec file to T. Marchioro one week in advance, it will be put into HTML. T. Marchioro will send out example of HTML title page.
